Scout News: April/May 2010
Troop numbers have continued to go up over the year, and currently have thirty nine members, both male and female, across the full section age range of 10 to 14. The Troop continues to be run by Phil Scurrah, Tony Hartley and Amabel Turner, now assisted by two Young Leaders, Chris Sawyer and Tom Haswell. In September, we decided to put all the older scouts into one patrol, to both broaden the activities which they do, and give the next set of Patrol Leaders a chance to shine.
The Troop started this year's scouting activities by joining with Scouts from across North Yorkshire for the Winter Camp at Thornthwaite. This was an excellent weekend thoroughly enjoyed by all the scouts there and for once the phrase 'chilly camp' was appropriate! This was followed by the Klondike Derby where 6 Scouts towed a sledge round an area at Pateley Bridge to reach a number of bases when they had to perform a number of tasks based on their scouting skills. 10th Harrogate took second place in this competition.
Along with the rest of the Group, the scouts will be attending this year's St George's Day Parade and church service on Sunday 25th April 2010 during which Tom, as an Explorer Scout Young Leader with the Troop has been asked to lead all the scouts and adults present in renewing their promises!
Currently, the Troop are preparing their teams that have entered the Teko-Teko and Tohunga competitions which will be taking place over the second weekend in May. This is a very popular hiking and camping competition which is run by our District and is entered by Scouts and Explorers from all over the County. This competition tests the Scouts abilities in navigation, camping, cooking and team work. Of course the main event for this will be the annual summer camp at Waddecar camp site in Lancashire when the Cubs will be camping alongside us for the first part of the camp.

Group News:
Over the last year, the Scout Group has continued to grow in numbers of both young people and adults and this has been reflected in our annual census report to Headquarters. This resulted in me receiving a letter of congratulations from our County Commissioner for the increase in membership for the second year running.
It was a very busy year for the Group as we celebrated 100 years since the formation of the original 10th Harrogate Scout Troop at Clifton House School. The celebrations took many different forms, including a treasure hunt and hog roast in June when the Group raised over £600 for the Harrogate Young Carer's; the formal Centenary celebration service at St. Wilfrid's which was attended by the Mayor of Harrogate and her consort along with the former Chief Scout, Major-General Michael Walsh and finished with our Group camp in October.
The Scout Group are very thrilled to announce that 3 of our current Scouts, plus an Explorer Scout Young Leader have all been selected from our Group to go to the Jamboree as part of the County's contingent. It is quite an accolade for the Scouts at St. Wilfrid's to have gained four out of the nine places from the District. I am sure that they will have a wonderful time in Sweden in 2011 and will gain a lot from the interaction with Scouts from all nations. Alongside these four, two of our Leaders have been selected to go to the Jamboree as members of the 500 strong UK group to join the International Service Team – these are the adults who become staff members ensuring that the participants gain as much as possible from their experience.
